Intensive outpatient program (IOP) for eating disorders

Rosecrance’s intensive outpatient program (IOP) offers a structured, clinically driven level of care specifically designed for individuals living with eating disorders who need more support than traditional outpatient therapy but do not require inpatient treatment. In this program, clients participate in regular therapy groups, individualized counseling, nutrition education, meal support, and specialized treatment components like family involvement and medical monitoring—all tailored to help restore healthy eating patterns, strengthen coping skills, and support lasting recovery while maintaining daily life responsibilities.

Could it be an eating disorder?

Disordered eating often starts quietly: food or exercise begins taking up more mental space than you’d like, or meals bring on guilt, shame, or anxiety. When persistent thoughts about food, dieting, or body image start affecting physical or mental health, that shift can signal an eating disorder.

Recognizing the warning signs

Changes in eating habits, a growing preoccupation with food or weight, and shifts in mood or energy can all point to disordered eating. Common signs include:

  • Skipping meals, strict dieting, or binge eating
  • Excessive exercise or guilt centered on food
  • Withdrawal, irritability, or secretive eating behaviors

Who we treat

Disordered eating can look different for different people. We can help if you or someone you love is experiencing:

  • Restrictive eating or avoiding certain foods
  • Binge eating or feeling out of control around food
  • Purging or other compensatory behaviors
  • Preoccupation with food, weight, exercise, or body image
  • Fear or anxiety around eating or meals
  • Difficulty participating in social situations involving food
  • Compulsive or excessive exercise
  • Feeling controlled by food, eating, or movement
  • Emotional distress related to eating, weight, or appearance

We provide treatment for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), other specified feeding or eating disorder (OSFED), unspecified feeding or eating disorder (UFED), disordered eating and chronic dieting, and co-occurring anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, and perfectionism.

How we treat:

  • Comprehensive assessments: Thorough evaluations to understand each person’s unique symptoms, goals, and treatment needs.
  • Individual therapy: Personalized treatment focused on recovery from eating disorders, improving body image, emotional regulation, and building sustainable coping skills.
  • Nutrition support: Collaborative nutrition counseling and meal support designed to reduce anxiety around eating and establish balanced, flexible eating patterns.
  • Virtual intensive outpatient program (IOP): Structured treatment combining group therapy, individual therapy, nutrition support, and psychiatric care for adults in Illinois and Indiana.
  • Outpatient recovery groups: Virtual therapy groups that provide education, skill development, and peer support while reinforcing recovery skills.
  • Psychiatric services: Medication evaluation and management when appropriate, as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
